The Academy for Cancer Wellness grew from a conversation between two of the partners, John Welker and Alice F. Chang as they were discussing how to acquire basketball tickets for the UCLA-UA game in 1996. |
|
As the conversation progressed, John informed Alice that his wife had recently recovered from Lymphoma and Alice said "Oh, Really! I just finished treatment for breast cancer about a year ago, I wish we had known each other in 1994-95." We both said spontaneously, "there should be a way to let people know." And we decided that we could do this. John being a military retiree talked about the pins that they proudly wore which showed that they had done something special. And Alice talked about having a pin as popular as the AIDS ribbon that would be a positive indication for survivors and their families. Because so many of the people who were survivors did not like to think in terms of warriors, struggling, and fighting, they decided to call their awardees champions (survivors). John's wife was immediatly invited to join the group, and it was decided that we would form a not for profit organization to support cancer wellness: survivors, families, friends and caregivers. |
